Split From the Mind - Split From the Mind (2025)

Split From the Mind, a Buffalo-based rock project led by Stephen Wright, Douglas Griffith Jr., and Charles Sanfilipo, embodies raw energy and heartfelt introspection. Born in a basement, their music values authenticity over trends, channeling rock's golden era while forging a unique path. Fueled by frustration and reflection, they aim to create music that matters, connecting deeply with listeners.

This is their self-titled debut EP, "a powerful exploration of struggle, defiance, and self-confrontation". Inspired by bands like Audioslave, TOOL, Rage Against the Machine, and Alice in Chains, they deliver a hard-hitting yet deeply reflective sound for those craving authenticity in modern rock.

Split From the Mind comprises 6 songs for 27 minutes of music. The opener "Patterns of.." starts with a hypnotic guitar riff followed by catchy vocal lines, reminding me of Ghosts. This is a very cool track, with very tasty bass lines as well, becoming more intense and aggressive in the second part.  I love the drumming of the following "Falling.." It is strong, powerful, and precise. The song is the longest one on the EP, and it features amazing riffs, a cool solo section, and a robust chorus.

"Power Is.." is almost grunge in some aspects. I like the vocals and the straightforward attitude on this one. The break in the middle is also very cool. Another change of the scenario with track four: "For F*ck’s Sake.." has rapping verses and a super catchy vocals. It's basically a "new metal" track with intense lyrics and a great vocal performance.

The "almost" title track "Spit From the Grind" features another super catchy vocals and fantastic drumming. This is probably my favourite track, if I have to choose one, with guitar and bass working amazingly together. The final song, "A Beat in the Dark," is very different, still with rapping vocals but almost an Rn'B track in the first minute. The song gets more robust, with a grunge chorus and heavy guitars.

Split From the Mind is a high-quality EP, exceptionally written and featuring a variety of influences and atmospheres. The vocals are highly eclectic and intense, and the band excels in both melodic and aggressive moods. The production is also very good, and all the instruments sound fantastic.
