Hush is The Mourning's debut album. It is a Prog trip, influenced by the greats of progressive rock and metal. Hush is an album of self-discovery, insights about the nature of existence, social evils, and overcoming adversity. Musically, it varies from delicate, tranquil, and simple to loud, furious, and intricate. All is done to best represent the album's themes of mental health and progress.
The album is comprised of 10 songs for 52 minutes of music. The opener Chaos Machine opens the album with a complicated - but catchy at the same time - guitar riff, followed by very cool vocal lines. I love the the guitar solo from 1.30, have a listen! The track is a perfect compromise between technique and easy listening. Well done to the band, as this kind of balance is very hard to find. Great vocal harmonies at the beginning of The Mountain, a track that reminded me of something in between Pain of Salvation and Fates Warning. Inspired drumming on track number 3, He Cries, with a spectacular arrangement and with the usual great guitar work and solos. Some Queensryche vibes (at least to my ears) for I Feel the Rain, a beautiful and classy ballad, very different from what we listened to, so far. Speaking about different, I love the tempo signature on the title track Hush, a very inspired one with peculiar keyboard lines and the usual great guitar solo.
Among all the other tracks, I like the drumming/bass of The Wind, the Pink Floyd mood of My Own Way, one my favourites of the album, and the intense vocals of Cries of the Mind. The last track of the album is Smooth Seas (you'll find the music video at the bottom of the page), with lots of tempo/atmosphere changes and the band showcasing all their abilities in terms of songwriting and personal skills. I love the central part of the song, with incredible solos, a funky part in the middle, and a very aggressive one straight after that, before another usual great solo section. This is probably my favourite song on the album, definitely a perfect finale for the album.
Hush is a great release, with 10 quality tracks from every point of view. The band's performance is spot-on in all the different atmospheres and moods and the production is perfect for the genre. If you are into 80s and 90s prog metal, and you like bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning or Pain of Salvation, this is a release for you.
