The latest concept album by Floating Worlds is named "Skywatcher" and was released on June 21st, 2024. The tale of "Skywatcher" is tied to the story of the preceding album "Battleship Oceania"; the primary character of the album, Winston Smith, is the son of Lieutenant David Smith.
"Skywatcher" is a ten-song concept album that tells the story of Paul Rogers, a journalist who previously covered the mysterious disappearance of Winston Smith, a nine-year-old boy who hoped to meet his father in a distant star by observing the sky through a telescope. A series of strange events led Winston to an intergalactic adventure.
Let's talk about music, now. The opener Strange Kid reminds me of the 80s, something in between Rush (of that period) and something more pop-oriented (in terms of production) like Phil Collins. I find the song very peculiar and with super catchy vocals, amazingly performed, and with a classy guitar solo. Very cool rhythm section for the following Starlight Wish and Parade, again with a super catchy chorus and with a quality arrangement.
Among other songs, I really like the groove of Ignorance Goodbye (what a chorus too!), the bass lines and the break in the middle of Hello From Out There. Also, the Tears for Fears mixed with Queensryche's mood of In the Dark, one of the most interesting songs on the album, in my opinion. The title track is also very interesting, with some oriental riffs and the usual fantastic and catchy vocals. Interesting closure with the instrumental Extraterrestrial, very atmospheric, moody and enjoyable.
"Skywatcher" is a very interesting release, in between a few genres, and that you will like for sure if you like the 80s sound. The songs are all well written and performed (the vocal lines are superb!) and the full length is enjoyable from start to finish. Give it a go and follow Floating Worlds on social media.
