Thrower - "Blink" (2024)

"Blink" is Thrower's debut album, produced by Bobby Amaru. It comprises 12 tracks and It draws on 90s grunge (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden), 2000s alternative (Incubus), 70s rock (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath), and some metal elements as well. The band is fairly new, formed in the summer of 2023 in Houston, Texas.

Reach opens the album with a killer riff. I love the rhythm section during the verses and the chorus is very catchy (great vocal performance, but it will be constant for the whole 44 minutes). It's a fantastic opener with a cool solo section, also. Dusted slows down the pace a little with verses reminding me of Soundgarden and with a very inspired chorus that will make tap your foot. The intro of All I Know is pure Zeppelin but the song is very direct with vocals reminding me of early Creed. A very inspired beginning of the album, surely. As track number 4, we find a cover of Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, revisited with a personal touch (always very appreciated and essential, for a good cover in my opinion), with a slower pace.

Among other songs, I love the sound of the riffs of Blink Dog, the contagious mood of Eye for an Eye (another great chorus), the "walking" bass lines during the verses of Desert Sun, the melody and the drumming of Never Tear Us Apart and Undertow. Toward the end, we find the acoustic Light the Way (what a sound!) and Overgrown, with an anthemic chorus and great guitars.

If you (like me) grew up musically in the 90s, "Blink" is an album for you. The production is absolutely perfect for the genre, and the performance of the band is absolutely spot on, with great vocals and a tight band behind.
