Master Splinter - Master Splinter (2024)

Master Splinter was formed in 2021 by Mick Arrell upon his return to Portland, Oregon, after living abroad. Mick joined forces with bassist Jason Schauer and drummer Mike Artinian that same year. Over the initial years, they focused on writing songs, perfecting their skills, and establishing their distinctive sound, all while Mick was setting up Splinter Studio for their recordings and productions.

Since 2023, the band has been on an upward trajectory, maintaining a consistent release schedule, performing live, creating content, and engaging in DIY music marketing, matching the drive and productivity of major bands. Aaron Bree, formerly the drummer for the metal band Horus, has taken up the role of percussionist, infusing a progressive element into their stoner/psychedelic core. With the lineup now complete, Master Splinter is poised to revitalize rock music's presence in the mainstream consciousness.

Their new self-titled album comprises 9 songs for 42 minutes of music. Heavy drums followed by a heavy riff open the album. A caustic version sounds like something in between Alice in Chains and Corrosion of Conformity and it's a very cool opener, dynamic and energetic, with a peculiar solo section/break as well. Tonopah is another cool track with super heavy guitars (I love the main riff) and drums but with melodic breaks as well, a catchy chorus and another original solo. Wednesday Night is an old track with groovy bass lines, a heavy chorus, and wah wah during the verses.

Among other tracks, I really like the chorus of and the solos of Ronin (Cross the Sea), the western atmosphere at the beginning of The Rage (and the usual beautiful heavy riffs), the contagious mood of Kanshousuo, previously released as a single and the System of a Down mood of during the verses of The Aug Man Cometh. The album ends with the heaviest track, Dragon's Blood, something in between Fates Warning and Queensryche, with the usual fantastic riffs (what a sound) very versatile vocal lines, and a super heavy break towards the end of the song. Definitely one of my favourite songs on the album.

I find this self titled very enjoyable and well written, recorded, performed and with a great sound as well. The thing I like the most are the riffs, always very inspired and heavy but everything is in the right place, with a dynamic and precise rhythm section and catchy and energetic vocals.
