Myles Kennedy – The Art Of Letting Go (2024)

I don't understand the sense of this album.
Don't get me wrong, The Art Of Letting Go shows all the class from Myles Kennedy and it's pure quality, but it could have easily been an Alter Bridge album. This third solo album follows the folk-infused "Year Of The Tiger" (something very different) from 2018 and the bluesy "The Ides Of March," but this one ventures into the same territory as his main band. Considering that he writes, plays the guitar and sings, why not use this material for Alter Bridge? Of course, we could say for Mark Tremonti and his solo project "Tremonti", but at least he's singing on his albums, so it's something different.

The three-piece band consists of Myles Kennedy on vocals/guitars, Zia Uddin on drums, and bassist Tim Tournier. Ten songs and nothing to skip here, all very cool song: the powerful title track at the beginning is a slap on your face (great drumming), same as the single (my favourite) Say What You Will and the super catchy (and pure Alter Bridge), Mr. Downside. As I wrote before, this album has no bad tracks, and choosing only three songs as top tracks (see below) is complicated. We have the moody Behind the Veil (great guitars during the break), the ballad Eternal Lullaby (you can hear that Myles plays with Slash, listen to the solo), the catchy and energetic (and with a super heavy riff) Nothing More to Gain, and the dark and moody final track How The Story Ends.

The Art of Letting Go is probably his best solo album where the American musician shows all his class and writing skills (apart from the usual spotless performance). But again, I would have used most of these songs for a great Alter Bridge album (to me, this is better than the latest two releases, just to say...) and used his solo career for something different. But this is just me. And the album is great.
