The Offspring - Supercharged (2024)

The Offspring are back with their 11th studio album, Supercharged. I had great expectations for this one as it's produced by Bob Rock, probably my favourite all time producer (Black Album by Metallica and Keep the Faith by Bon Jovi are two of my favourites, in terms of sound). This album sounds powerful but a little too modern, for my taste, especially the vocal production.

Energetic start for Looking Out for #1, the single Light it Up, and especially The Fall Guy (a mix between some of their hits, the chorus is a copy of The Kids Aren't Alright, for instance). Speaking of "Alright", we find the other single Make it All Right, which is a happy and radio-friendly song, a sort of copy of Blink 182 and something I don't want to hear from Dexter Holland & co (almost in their 60s!). Same thing for Ok, But this is the last time, I like the rhythm section but the chorus is too pop-punk for my taste.

Luckily we have songs like Truth in Fiction and Get Some which could be extracted from Smash, to me their best album. That's what I want to hear from them. Come to Brazil is a bizarre experiment, with a Thrash metal (and very cool) verse but with an awful chorus, at least for my taste. Toward the end, I like Hanging by a Thread, and not bad is the final You Can't Get There from Here.

The album is very short (32 minutes), which is very good for me, and I like some episodes of the album, mainly in the second part, but not some others (the singles, for instance). Overall we find good music in this Supercharged and the band still knows how to hit, if they want to.
