After releasing 17 singles and 3 EPs, Electric High's long-awaited debut album is finally here! Titled Colorful White Lies, this album showcases the essence of the Norwegian rock band’s early days. Comprising eleven tracks, along with two bonus tracks available on CD and streaming, this album was developed over four years and through multiple recording sessions. Despite its diversity, Colorful White Lies maintains a distinct theme that ties it all together.
The album comprises 13 songs for 47 minutes of music. Pure Hard Rock opener, Sun, something in between Slash and Van Halen, to my ears, with a spectacular performance by the band. I love the song's pace and mood; this is probably my favourite on the album if I have to choose one. Great start. Harder to Justify slows down the pace but this is another tune that will make you bang your head, with inspired riffs and a contagious mood (and a fantastic uptempo finale). The title track has some pop elements but a very strong chorus and great riffs and drumming, as usual. Speaking of great riffs, you will find more in the robust Seven Wonders (I love the vocals during the verses) and Wasted (the bass lines and the solo are fantastic!).
Among other songs, the bluesy Go Easy on My Heart features super catchy vocals and great lyrics, the peculiar Cyclone has some late R.E.M feeling, Royal in Rags is very AC/DC, Crooks has an old blues feeling and a hypnotic chorus (it will get stuck in your head) and it's another peculiar one (I love the fact the band likes to experiment). Towards the end of the album, Weeping Gods features a massive riff (Toni Iommi, is that you?) and the closing Siren's Lullaby is (again) extremely catchy.
Colorful White Lies is quality from every point of view (I love the cover too) and I find it very inspired and with lots of variety. The performance is spotless and the production is perfect for the genre. If you are a Hard Rock fan (but with an open mind, the band loves to experiment here and there), this is 100% an album for you.
