Eric Coomer just released his latest work, "American Polemic."
This concept album examines today's social scene using a diverse range of genres, including fuzz rock, post-punk, symphonic, and thrash influences. The album's broad music includes operatic vocals, a horn section, a choir, and renditions of Sheryl Crow's "Love is a Good Thing" and R.E.M.'s "These Days." The album examines themes of chaos, disappointment, resilience, and the effects of Donald Trump and the MAGA world.
After a short intro, we find the first track “Outrage Us,” opening with fuzzy riffs, energetic vocals, and high pace drumming. A very cool track, with a minimalist arrangement but very effective and enjoyable from start to finish, with an unexpected break in the middle and a very cool guitar solo. The song "sings from Trump's perspective and portrays him as a
provocateur who thrives on chaos and outrage". The following "None of Them Are You" is slower, intricate, and even pop, in some aspects, with catchy vocals.
“The Fret Less Base” is about those who refuse to accept facts and ask. I love the pace and the drums on this one, very dynamic with some furious tempo changes and a pop break. A very eclectic song, amazingly written and performed (I love the grunge ending!). "Everything's fine", is angry and with super catchy vocals, with an (again) unexpected tempo/mood change towards the end. This is probably my favourite song on the album if I have to choose one.
The two covers mentioned at the beginning of the article, Sheryl Crow's "Love is a Good Thing" and R.E.M.'s "These Days." are very well performed and with a personal (I would say angry, especially regarding the first one) touch in terms of performance and sound. The album ends with “All is Not Lost” which features the usual cool riff and this time, even prog atmospheres/tempo and an electronic break as well! A great closing track, very eclectic, like the entire album.
I really enjoyed listening to "American Polemic", a very cool album, amazingly performed and produced, with a powerful message and with lots of variety. Even inside the same songs, there are sometimes different universes. A very eclectic one, enjoyable from start to finish, energetic and inspired.
