Never On Sunday II - Interview

- Hi and welcome to this interview. Tell us about your latest release.
- Hi, I’m Alexandros, the bassist and singer of Never on Sunday II. Our latest release is an EP called “We’re Not Muppets”. It contains six songs, one of which is a cover of “House of The Rising Sun”.

- How would you describe your sound?
- We play blues rock, but always combined with the sounds each band member brings to the table. We all have different influences. For example, Thodoris the sax player listens to jazz fusion, Dimitra the pianist/keyboardist has a classical music background and Babis the drummer has a passion for prog metal.

- What do you write about?
- I usually write stories from the character’s point of view, with no moralistic filter. Usually a catalytic or catastrophic event takes place that changes the character’s life dramatically. The lyrics and the music are about those changes.

- What do you listen to when you are home?
- Country, punk rock, metal, folk music, jazz rock, you name it.

- Your favourite live performance so far?
- My favourite performance of ours was at Athina Live Stage of the Art Music School Fakanas. There was a significant time gap between that and our previous gig, so we all felt the improvement in our playing, after many months of rehearsals.

- Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage.
Well, when we first started playing together, we participated in a band contest organised by a rock bar in a suburban area just outside of Athens. While on stage and after hearing the results which were not in our favour, the guitar player and singer of the band Andonis, thought the whole affair was rigged, so he promptly gave the administration “the finger”. We got banned from playing there. I think that’s pretty funny.

- Your favourite albums?
- Some of our favourite albums as a band are:
Exile On Main St. (1972) by The Rolling Stones
Argus (1972) by Wishbone Ash
Wish You Were Here (1975) by Pink Floyd
Cure For Pain (1993) by Morphine
Lateralus (2001) by Tool

- A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
- Tom Waits. A true story teller. A musician who would not just tell stories but tall tales full of myth and wonder. And he’s funny too.

- What would you ask for backstage, if you were the most important band on earth?
- A nice buffet with sandwiches, donuts, fruits and coffee would be nice.

- What are your plans for the near future?
- A new E.P., which will be released sometime in 2025.
