Whereafter - "blessed & depressed" (2025)

Whereafter, a band from Atlanta, Georgia, USA, will release their debut album, "blessed & depressed" on the 21st of February. The album is an exploration of the various facets of anxiety and despair. In contrast to the habit of releasing single after single after single, it is meant to evoke the era when whole albums were valued. It is intended to be a group of songs that work well together. The drums were played by Kellii Scott from the influential 90s alternative band Failure. The album was mastered by Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters, known for working with artists like Prince, Fleetwood Mac, KoRn, and Alter Bridge.

The album is comprised of 13 tracks for 33 minutes of music. After the intro Let's Talk (all the songs have a spoken words intro) we have the first song, Blind Heart, and on this one I really like the contrast between the heavy guitars and rhythm section and the melodic and clean vocals, during the verse, to explode in a super catchy and energetic chorus. The song also features a stunning guitar solo. A great opener. Very cool and groovy bass lines for Wasting Away, with another punchy and anthemic chorus and a stunning guitar solo. I love the riff opening Who I Am, a song reminding me of something in between late Queensryche and Velvet Revolver. I know, it's a weird combination but the song is great!

Stuck On You is another cool song, heavy and slow with very 90s vocal lines (some Radiohead here) and something different compared to the previous tracks, so far. Very aggressive vocals for The Curse, another different track very difficult to label under a genre. I love the variety of the album and here is an acoustic track for Crooked Line, an old-style ballad, with an amazing arrangement and melodic vocal lines. The album ends with a positive message of You Are Not Alone, saying "Just be happy"... but the record breaks.

"blessed & depressed" is a quality release from every point of view. I love the concept album approach and I enjoyed listening to the album in its entirety. The album will be released on the 21st of February so follow Whereafter on social media for updates.
