Austin-based quartet Frogmouth has been energizing stages with their dynamic, hook-driven alternative rock since 2022. With the release of their debut full-length album, Identity Thief, they're ready to make a major leap forward.
The new album, released on the 21st of March, features nine tracks for 35 minutes of music. High energy start with the opener, Easy Lies, featuring super catchy vocals (I love the backing), punchy guitars (love the solos!), and a dynamic rhythm section. Definitely a great start and a great choice as an opener, and probably my favourite song on the album, if I have to choose one. More or less the same mood for the following track, Would you believe, that reminds me of early Soul Asylum (still a fan of Dave Pirner!). Fantastic drumming and solo section for this one as well. Speaking about drumming, check out the intro of Sleeping Dogs, punk and a song that takes no prisoners, this time with hints of early Green Day, to my ears, at least.
Track number 4, Strays, slows down the pace a bit, and tasty bass lines are in evidence, like Imposter Syndrome, with intricate guitar riffs and drum patterns and some very old school influences, especially in the backing vocals. I like the pace and the mood of How Could I Not, with the usual fantastic drumming (I promise I'll stop mentioning that) and rock n roll influence. Let's say something like Elvis meeting Bad Religion. Among other songs, Another Body Count features fantastic riffs (what a sound!) and a great pre-chorus, I love the "walking" bass lines of Oleander and the crazy solo section (fusion mixed with some Red hot chili peppers vibes?!), and the energy of the closing track Long in the tooth, with lots of tasty guitar solos, fantastically performed.
